Sanj & Kester’s Taylor’s Mistake Beach Elopement

Some weddings are more than a celebration — they’re a reflection of love, family, and the unexpected moments that shape our lives. Sanj and Kester’s intimate Christchurch elopement at Taylor’s Mistake was one of those weddings.

I’ve known both Sanj and Kester through the Christchurch photography and modelling community — Sanj often in front of the lens, and Kester behind it. So when they asked me to be their wedding photographer, I felt incredibly honoured. Documenting their day wasn’t just about capturing portraits by the ocean; it was about preserving a love story that felt deeply personal to all of us in the creative world.

Getting Ready & First Look

The day began quietly in a cosy Airbnb, where Sanj prepared by herself. Her dress — flowing and elegant with lace detail across the bodice — hung softly in the morning light. She slipped into it with a smile that carried both nerves and excitement. On the bed sat her bouquet, a pearl-detailed purse, and small details that made the day feel personal and complete.

Meanwhile, Kester was waiting just outside for their first look. The moment Sanj stepped out, veil trailing behind her, his expression softened instantly. They stood together, taking each other in for the first time that morning, the ocean breeze already carrying whispers of what was to come. First looks are always grounding, but theirs carried a particular tenderness — a pause before the ceremony where it was just the two of them, wrapped in love and anticipation.

Family Moments That Matter

Weddings are rarely just about two people — they’re about the web of family connections around them. For Sanj and Kester, that truth rang especially strong. Kester’s parents, still in the Philippines caring for his grandmother, couldn’t make the trip. Their absence was deeply felt, but the love they held for the couple stretched across oceans and into every part of the day.

And then there was Sanj’s mum. She wasn’t expected to attend the ceremony, but arrived to watch her daughter marry by the sea. The moment they saw each other was emotional beyond words — hugs that lingered, tears that flowed, and the kind of expressions that show the depth of family love.

As a photographer, these moments remind me why it’s so important to know the sensitive family situations before the day. When I understand who might be missing, who might unexpectedly arrive, or where emotions may run high, I can be ready — not to intrude, but to quietly document the rawness of those interactions. Those photos often become some of the most treasured memories.

The Ceremony at Taylor’s Mistake

Taylor’s Mistake, with its rugged cliffs and wild surf, set the stage for their vows. A wooden arch, draped with white fabric and delicate florals, framed the couple against the endless blue horizon. The sand beneath their feet and the sound of waves became the soundtrack of their wedding.

Sanj’s brother walked her down the sandy aisle, bouquets marking the path. At the end, Kester waited, dressed in a light suit, his smile betraying every ounce of joy and nerves. Rosie Muir, their celebrant, led the ceremony with warmth, guiding them through their vows and the exchange of rings.

The words they spoke were simple and heartfelt, promises wrapped in laughter and tears. And when they placed rings on each other’s hands, it wasn’t just a formality — it was a promise sealed by the sound of the waves and the presence of those who loved them most.

A Celebration by the Sea

Following the ceremony, their family gathered close in celebration. There were hugs that seemed to last forever, laughter spilling over the wind, and a cake table set with sparkling rosé, a simple white frosted cake, and Polaroids of the couple perched as the topper.

Sanj and Kester cut the cake together, giggling as they fed each other a bite, both with cake smeared smiles that matched the joy in their eyes. They toasted to love, to family, and to the journey ahead.

And then came one of my favourite moments — their family showering them with silly string as they walked down the beach together, hand in hand. The air was alive with laughter, colourful ribbons tangled in their hair and outfits, and a sense of celebration that felt wild and carefree.

Portraits in the Wild

After the formalities, we wandered the shoreline for portraits. The coast was moody and windswept, the kind of landscape that feels both cinematic and intimate. Sanj’s veil caught the wind as Kester twirled her across the sand, their laughter echoing across the waves.

They held each other close, quiet moments tucked between playful spins. One of my favourite frames is Kester kissing Sanj’s forehead as she leaned into him, eyes closed, utterly at peace. Another shows them with foreheads pressed together, grins breaking into laughter, the kind of expression that tells a whole story without words.

Their portraits were a perfect reflection of who they are — creative, deeply connected, and grounded in the joy of simply being together.

Why These Stories Matter

Looking back on Sanj and Kester’s Taylor’s Mistake elopement, I’m reminded that weddings are never just about timelines or checklists. They’re about people. About family. About the little details you can’t plan for but mean everything in the end.

As a Christchurch wedding photographer, I believe one of the most important parts of my job is understanding the relationships and stories behind the couple. Knowing that Kester’s parents couldn’t attend, or that Sanj’s mum might arrive unexpectedly, allowed me to anticipate and capture the moments that mattered most. These aren’t just photographs — they’re memories frozen in time, the kind couples return to again and again.

For Sanj and Kester, their day was a reminder that love doesn’t need grandeur to be profound. All you really need is each other, a backdrop that feels like home, and the people who mean the most.

Reflection

Sanj and Kester’s elopement at Taylor’s Mistake will always stay with me. It wasn’t just the wild beauty of the coastline or the intimate scale of the celebration that made it special. It was the way their love shone through, the unexpected family reunions, the laughter, and the quiet moments by the ocean.

For couples planning a Christchurch or Canterbury wedding, their story is a beautiful reminder that the heart of a wedding isn’t in the scale or the spectacle. It’s in the connections, the emotions, and the love that ties it all together.
